Neurofeedback Therapy
A noninvasive procedure called neurofeedback therapy uses brain wave measurements to inform the patient in real time how their brain is functioning. It's a type of biofeedback, a mind-body technique that aims to assist patients in gaining voluntary control over some bodily functions that are typically involuntary (like heart rate, muscle contraction, or brain waves). To inform the patient of specific physiological processes taking place in their body, biofeedback uses electronic devices.
In particular, neurofeedback therapy teaches patients how their brain reacts to specific triggers, which aids in the development of self-regulation of brain function. Patients gradually develop the ability to identify specific brain states. They can then learn how to mimic a desired state, like relaxation, or stay away from a negative state, like anxiety, in their daily lives.
